This was a pretty good game, but could have used a little bit more polish. I liked the short length, the graphics were pretty good (though some interior areas could have been more detailed).
The level of violence seemed gratuitous- GTA seems like cartoony PG rated violence compared to this. There's no non-lethal bar fighting with fists and throws- you can only slice people open with a hatchet.
(I've finished the game but not all the side missions yets) I think if they did make it longer they should have worked in more standard western scenes involving defending or attacking moving trains or stagecoaches, maybe some trick horse-riding- jumping from a horse onto a moving object or the other way around. And where's the Sundance Kid scene where the player character and a buddy are holed up in a little shack with attackers all around? If they really wanted to take it further they could have had the ability to buy your own ranch and develop it and defend it from raiders. Maybe a sequel, or a different game (Red Dead Revolver when I get a PS2?).
There's more than a few little instances where it seems like the designers should have altered things slightly to fit the context in the game- objects and people in inconsistent places. Several times the player is captured and supposedly disarmed- but you still have a hatchet.
The side mission animations of characters talking to the player character can be odd- lots of shrugging and gesticulating.
The physics are decent but sometimes produce weird intersections of objects and characters dead bodies can be thrown up the sides of hills and then lie flat sticking out of the hill.
The controls are ok, but switching weapons was frustrating in a battle. Why can't I run and switch weapons and drink the health replenishing whiskey.
The plotline was decent, I followed it a lot better than the plotline in Hulk.
I didn't play more than a couple of side-missions until I came up against the Reid (the preacher on horseback) bossfight- I then spent a couple hours building up my character to about 60% and went back and killed him easily, and beat the rest of the game with more than a few reloads for the final bossfight.
